Session Description: Federal Tax Update
Presenters: Jim Moran CPA, MST, Andrew Plourde, CPA, Kolbie R. Deamon, Esq., McLane Middleton and Joshua Sandler, McLane Middleton
This session will on recent federal tax updates. This will include an update on Schedule K2 reporting, the new disregarded entity reporting rules, overview of IRS Notice 2022-63 relating to Research and Experimental Expenditures, the federal tax deduction for pass through entity tax payments and any late breaking tax developments.
Jim Moran

Jim is a tax director at Wipfli LLC. His practice includes advising corporations, flow-through entities, and individuals on federal and state tax matters for over 37 years, primarily in the manufacturing, retail, and distribution industries. He is also a member of Wipfli’s Energy Credits and Tax Incentives team. He has authored several articles for New Hampshire Business Magazine. Jim graduated from Bentley College with his BS degree in accounting. He also received his MS degree in Taxation from McCallum Graduate School of Business at Bentley College. Andrew Plourde
CPA, KPMG
Andy is a licensed CPA and tax partner in KPMG’s Boston office. He has spent his entire twenty-one year career at KPMG and has served the asset management industry the entire time. Andy’s client experience includes engagements with all types of asset managers and investment entities including hedge funds, private equity funds, venture capital funds, mutual funds, and investment advisor entities. While Andy continues to help many large hedge funds and asset managers plan and execute against complex tax compliance strategies, he also leads the firm’s local tax support team for KPMG’s Emerging Manager Platform in Boston. This team focuses on asset managers who are new to market and who often start with limited in-house resources. Working hand-in-hand with the audit team, Andy helps these newly launched funds navigate the complex rules present in the asset management industry today including all aspects of regulatory and tax compliance. Kolbie R. Deamon, Esq.
McLane Middleton
Kolbie is a member of McLane Middleton’s Tax Department. She advises individuals, families, and fiduciaries on estate and income tax planning and wealth preservation strategies. Kolbie also advises business owners with respect to entity creation, corporate governance, business succession planning, and structuring transactions to ensure compliance with the Internal Revenue Code and maximization of tax planning opportunities. In addition, Kolbie advises clients regarding compliance with ERISA, the Internal Revenue Code, and other complex federal laws applicable to employee benefit plans. She provides advice to employers regarding all forms of executive compensation, retirement plans, and health and welfare plans. Session Description: Exploring Generative AI
Presenter: John F. Weaver, Esq., Director, McLane Middleton
This session will focus on the generative AI landscape including: understanding what generative AI is; how practitioners and their clients are using generative AI applications; intellectual property issues associated with generative AI; understanding the terms of use agreements governing generative AI applications; ethical issues in generative AI (e.g., duty of care and confidentiality); disinformation and deepfakes; and the adoption of generative AI policies to govern organizations’ use of the technology. Recent current events will help inform practitioners of traps for the unwary when using generative AI.

John is a director is chair of McLane Middleton’s Artificial Intelligence Practice Group. His practice includes conducting risk assessments of AI systems, advising clients concerning AI policies and best practices, and counseling clients regarding emerging legal and practical issues in AI. John also serves on the steering committee for the American Bar Association’s Artificial Intelligence & Robotics National Institute. He is the author of Robots Are People Too: How Siri, Google Car, and Artificial Intelligence Will Force Us to Change Our Laws, a contributing writer at Slate focusing on legal issues implicated by AI and autonomous devices, and a columnist for and member of the board of editors of The Journal of Robotics, Artificial Intelligence & Law. Joseph is a Senior Stakeholder Liaison with the Communication and Liaison, Stakeholder Liaison Field division of the Internal Revenue Service and has been doing outreach and helping tax practitioners navigate the IRS for 23 years. Prior to this he was a Revenue Agent with the Internal Revenue Service auditing small businesses for 9 years.

Session Description: New Developments in Retirement Planning

The rules for retirement planning continue to change. This session will review the effect of SECURE 2.0 on retirement planning strategies and highlight current planning techniques. The panelists will illustrate Roth IRA conversions, discuss the intricacies of trust-inherited IRAs, and note the supercharged combination of Roth IRAs and trusts. They also will discuss updates to charitable planning techniques, including qualified charitable distributions, charitable gift annuities, and donor-advised funds.
Kelly Guarino, JD

Kelly is a senior member of Fiduciary Trust Company’s trusts & estates legal team, providing trust administration and estate planning advice for clients in collaboration with Fiduciary Trust’s investment officers and clients outside estate planning counsel. Kelly also applies her expertise to charitable giving matters, private foundations and other nonprofit organizations, and Fiduciary Trust’s donor advised fund program offered through Fiduciary Trust Charitable. Previously, Kelly was an estate planning and tax attorney at Lourie & Cutler, PC and other Boston firms for nearly two decades. Kelly received her BA from the University of Utah and her JD from Harvard Law School, and she clerked for the High Court of American Samoa. Kelly is currently on the Board of Directors of the Carlisle Conservation Foundation and is a member of The Trustees of Reservations – Planned Giving Working Group.
Sarah R. Grandfield, JD
VP & Trust Counsel, Fiduciary Trust Company
Sarah is a Vice President and Trust Counsel of Fiduciary Trust Company, where she helps advise clients on all aspects of estate and wealth transfer planning. She also counsels’ trustees and trust beneficiaries with respect to tax and fiduciary matters, and assists with the settlement of estates.
Prior to joining Fiduciary, Sarah was a partner in the Private Clients and Fiduciary Services Group at Verrill Dana, LLP and began her career at Choate, Hall & Stewart, LLP, where she was an associate in the Wealth Management Group. Sarah earned her JD from Georgetown University Law Center cum laude and her BA also from Georgetown University. She is a member of the Private Clients Division of the American Bar Association Section on International Law, the Boston Foundation Professional Advisors Network, the Boston Estate Planning Council, and the Trust and Estates Consortium.

The State Tax Update session will review recent changes and issues with state taxation nationwide with a focus on New Hampshire and other New England States. Topics will include nexus issues, apportionment and market based sourcing, unitary reporting, taxation on out of state employees and recent tax and other unique state taxation items

Kevin has been a certified public accountant since 1995 and is a graduate of Southern New Hampshire University (Previously New Hampshire College) in Manchester, New Hampshire. Kevin has worked both in the private and public sectors. Kevin also has credentials as a Certified Fraud Examiner (CFE) and Accredited Business Valuation (ABV). Kevin sits on the Executive Board of Trustees for the New Hampshire Society of CPAs and has served as the Society’s Co-Chair for the Tax and Legislative Committee for several years. Kevin has and continues to serve in other committee positions including being the former Vice President of the NH Association of Certified Fraud Examiners.
Matthew Foley, CPA

Matthew Foley, CPA is a tax principal at UHY. He has extensive experience in corporate, flow-through, and personal taxation, and advises clients on domestic and cross-border issues, mergers and acquisitions, succession planning, and multi-state tax planning. Matt is a member of the American Institute of Certified Public Accounts and the New Hampshire Society of Certified Public Accounts, and he holds a Bachelor of Arts in Economics / Accounts from the College of the Holy Cross and a Master of Science in Taxation from Bentley University. Prior to joining UHY, Matt worked for over eight years with EY and four years with the national accounting firm Wolf & Company.

Session Description: What’s New in Estate Planning?

This session will focus on recent changes in the estate planning and estate and gift tax landscape. The panelists will provide an overview of the anticipated changes to the federal estate and gift tax exemption amount as well as summarize current case law developments that affect wealth transfer strategies including formula clauses, valuation disputes, and charitable giving. The new case law will help inform practitioners of traps for the unwary when implementing gifting strategies before the exemption amount potentially changes at the end of 2025.
